1.What are Vaulten and Vaulten 2.0?
Vaulten is a software that offers subscription-based online backup, that can protect computer data against losses. Vaulten 2.0 is the latest release based on cloud computing and other next-gen technologies, and incorporating many exciting user requested features such as file sync and data sharing.

2.How can my business or personal data be lost?
There are many ways in which one can lose data. The vast majority of data losses occur due to hardware failure or human error; there are also innumerable examples of software failure and destructive virus attacks. In addition, data lose can also occur by theft or physical damage due to fires or floods. These forms of damage are difficult to protect against; however, it is possible to ensure that you always have a copy of your data, offshore. The easiest and most secure way of doing this is with an automatic online backup.

3.Why should I protect my data with Vaulten?
With Vaulten you don’t invest on any hardware, space, resources etc. and pay only for the data protected. With one subscription you may protect as many computers as you wish. Vaulten leverages latest technologies that automatically work in the background securing your critical files. We make sure you never have to fear having your company records disappear or lose your presentation, documents, photos, etc.

4.How can I get protection?
It is easy to get protected with Vaulten. Download Vaulten software from our website, and install it onto your computer. Avoid the hassle of installing CDs, reading technical manuals or shipping. Then you select a subscription that meets your needs, and your data and documents are automatically secured every minute.

5.How does the backup software work?
Our backup software makes sure that the data you wish to backup is continually sent to our cloud infrastructure. The software also enables you to retrieve your data at any time. We store your data in a secure format, which cannot be read until you retrieve it to your own computer. We use high encryption throughout the transfer process, ensuring that no one can view your files at any time.

6.Is data protected all the time?
Yes. Once you’ve downloaded our software and purchased a subscription, we protect the data round the clock. We also update Vaulten software regularly, so you always have the latest version installed. An internet connection is required for data protection to be enabled.

7.What happens if my entire server or PC breaks down?
If a malfunction should occur and your computer or server breaks down, you may wish to recover your files as they were prior to the breakdown. You must first replace any defective hardware and reinstall your operating system, as well as the backup software from our website once again. With a few simple clicks you will have access to your backup. In our storage management catalogs, there are indexes of all of the files you have backed up. The system displays the date and time of when the files were uploaded. By looking through this via the user menu, you can easily find the files you wish to restore or you can choose to restore all of the files as they were before you lost them.

The Backup Feature of the Software

1.What operating systems can I run Vaulten on?
Vaulten supports all popular operating systems. Which means you can run Vaulten on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora & openSUSE).

2.Does Vaulten backup the whole file every time it changes?
No. Vaulten scans the file and finds only the change, and stores new data blocks for those areas of the file. This also means that Vaulten is able to store all historical versions of a document using little additional space.

3.Does Vaulten store a file if I delete it from my computer?
Yes. That’s the whole point right? Much of the data loss occurs due to accidental deletion. If you delete something from your computer, Vaulten will move the deleted item to the Recycle Bin display within under that computer, where it stays perpetually -- until you decide to manually remove them.

4.Can I backup multiple computers under my account?
Yes, with just a single subscription you may backup multiple computers. There is no limit to how many computers you backup and Vaulten only charges for the data that is secured. This also allows businesses to secure computers with different operating systems.

5.What about Servers and external hard drives?
Vaulten also supports selecting external hard drives, removable devices, and network volumes for backup. Vaulten’s goal is to provide a central place to safely and securely back up and store all your data, regardless of what computer, hardware, or operating system it exists on. Moreover with compression and deduplication, you can store more data than you subscribe for.

6.How can I make Vaulten start automatically when computer starts?
By default Vaulten does not automatically start when you restart your computer. We pass the control of this behavior to you – the user. To automatically start Vaulten simply click on the ‘Preferences’ link at the top right-hand corner of the Vaulten software and under ‘Interface’ select the checkbox ‘Launch Vaulten at OS startup?’

7.How can I start Vaulten minimized when computer starts?

8.What if I forget my password?
We strongly advise you input the password hint when you create your password with Vaulten. In case you don’t have a password hint then neither our systems nor our staff can help you with the password.

9.What should I choose – ‘New’ or ‘Existing’ Account?

When the backup software starts up for the first time after installation, it gives you two options, as:

-New Account: If this is your first time using the backup software, and thus have not registered an account already, you should click the ‘New User’ button. This will lead you to an account creation page. Once you complete this you will be prompted to select the files or folders that you wish to secure.

-Existing Account: If you already have an account and want to restore your files, or reinstall the Vaulten software, click the ‘Existing User’ button. This will lead you to a login window where you can enter your username and password. You will then have the option to restore your files or setup Vaulten to backup from the machine you are now working on.

10.How can I select my important files?

On the Vaulten software you can select files via a number of pre-defined options. These options are defined in one of two ways:

By type: For ease-of-use Vaulten allows you to select files by its type. For e.g. you can select ‘Documents’ or ‘Pictures’ and Vaulten will automatically select all your documents or pictures to be securely backed to the cloud.

By file/folder: For users who wish to secure specific files or folders the ‘Advanced’ option is ideal. Here an explorer style layout allows users to select data, even from network drives to be backed.

11.Can I pause the backup process?
Yes you can. At the ‘Home’ tab simply click on the ‘Pause All Uploads’ button. Do remember to resume the backup.

12.Can Vaulten backup Exchange, Oracle, MS SQL, etc?
Many customers use Vaulten to backup production servers, using various Windows flavors, Mac OS X, and Linux. Anything that you could backup with tapes, external hard drives, etc. can be handled by Vaulten. For Exchange, MS SQL, Oracle, and so on, Vaulten works best by backing up periodic archives or database dump files. This is the most common way that backups from these systems are created, and this is the way probably 95% of administrators arrange for backups. In short Vaulten is not designed for backing up a "hot" copy of Exchange's or Oracle’s data files, while they are running and changing them.

Billing and Subscription

1.How do I renew my subscription?
There is no need for you to renew your subscription manually. Any account which is still active on your renewal date will automatically renew. If you do not wish to renew your subscription at the end of the month or year, either cancel your account before its renewal date or contact billing at billing@vaulten.com. Please keep in mind that unless your account is completely closed, you will be billed automatically. Uninstalling Vaulten does not cancel your account.

2.How do I upgrade the amount of space in my account?
This can be done by selecting upgrade option from the Vaulten software. When upgrading your account select the total amount of data that you would like in your account and not the amount of data you want to add to your current plan. For example, say you currently have a 100 GB plan and you would like to purchase another 100 GB for a total of 200 GB altogether. When upgrading, you should select the 200 GB plan from the drop-down menu, not 100 GB.

3.When upgrading, will Vaulten pro-rate the amount already paid?
Yes, we do pro-rate all upgrades. ‘Pro-rating’ means that we will apply any remaining funds you have on your current subscription towards the purchase of additional space.

4.Why do I still see same storage space even after upgrading?
When you upgrade to a higher plan, you do not purchase additional space, you purchase an entirely new plan. Rather than selecting the amount of space you want to add, you should select the total amount of data you would like to have in your plan. For e.g. if you’re on a 100 GB plan and wish to upgrade then you should select the 200 GB plan. When you select an additional 100 GB of space, you actually purchase another year's worth of 100 GB total.

5.How can I cancel Vaulten?
If you no longer wish to be protected by Vaulten, you can simply select the ‘Cancel’ option under your Account. Post which you may uninstall the software from the user menu with one click of a button. If you face any issues or need assistance in this matter please write to billing@vaulten.com.

The Sync and Share Features of the Software

1.Does the Sync and Share feature cost extra?
No - the sync and share feature is included in our overall product offering which includes backup, sharing, remote access, and storage.

2.When a file changes, how soon it gets synced?
If all the files in your backup set are uploaded, the sync changes will occur immediately. However, if there are items that remain in the backup Queue, Vaulten will wait for these items to fully backup before it performs any of the syncs.

3.Do files have to be backed up before they can be sync'd?
Yes. Sync works alongside backup - and calculates the actions to take by comparing backup journals.

4.Can I sync across various platforms?
You can feel free to sync across as many devices and platforms as you like - from your Mac to your PC to your Linux box. And Vaulten will automatically synchronize all file types. You must note that the same files may appear differently on other platforms or other computers.

5.What if I am syncing two folders and have a file in each with the same name?
The more recent file will take priority and become the active file on both machines. The older file will become a historical version which is accessible anytime on the ‘Restore’ tab under that filename.

6.Are there any file size limitations in sync and share?
No. You may select as large file as you wish to sync or share. That also makes it easier for you to share larger files among colleagues and clients.

General Tips Including Connectivity

1.How can I connect Vaulten using a proxy server?
If you are using Vaulten for the first time, when you are given the option to create a new account or login to existing account, click the ‘Settings’ button. Check ‘Connect using a HTTP Proxy Server’ and fill out the proxy's hostname/IP address, port (80 by default), and your username and password if applicable. If you are already running Vaulten, click ‘Preferences’, and choose the ‘Network’ tab, and set up as above. You will need to restart Vaulten for the settings to take effect.

2.How can I backup my Outlook files?
We highly recommend that Vaulten NOT archive the Outlook files directly but rather archive periodic backup copies of the Outlook files. There is an add-in for Outlook that will remind you to backup your PST file and even copy it to another folder for you if you like. You can then have Vaulten backup this folder and operations will be much more reasonable.
